Do you have a problem with aMPdroid? Some parts of the app isn't showing the correct data, is slow or crashing? Read here how to properly report a bug and get help from the developers and other users.

!!!Important!!!

The aMPdroid 0.8 branch is no longer being developed, so reporting bugs on this version is useless. Try the latest version. Maybe your problem is already fixed.

Before reporting a bug

Make sure your problem hasn't been reported already

Search the aMPdroid forums and userecho page. Perhap someone else has the same problem and already reported it. If you are not sure if your problem qualifies as a bug, ask in the current aMPdroid thread.

Try to verify that the problem is with aMPdroid

Often, if data isn't shown the problem is that the backend isn't properly configured or has a bug. Before reporting bugs in the aMPdroid forums, try to verify that the backend delivers the correct data. You can use other MpExtended clients (e.g. WebMediaPortal) to do this, or manually download the data in your webbrowser. If the backend doesn't deliver the correct data, you can still report a bug, but you should report it in the MPExtended threads instead (MPExtended Service 0.4 or MPExtended WebMediaPortal 0.4).

Write a proper bug report

After you have made sure that your problem hasn't been reported and is an actual bug in the latest version of aMPdroid, you can go ahead and write a bug report in the MediaPortal forums. Follow these guidelines to maximise your chances of getting help:

Create a new thread

aMpdroid has its own subforum so don't report bugs in the (usually very long) release posts. Create a new forum topic for your problem. For very small/obvious problems or when you are not sure if this is a real bug, you can also use the release post.

Give a detailed report

Describe your problem with as much details as possible:

  • When does it happen?
  • Where does it happen?
  • What exactly happens and what is expected to happen?
  • Which version (the latest?!) are you using?
  • Which phone and Android version (stock/custom rom/...)?

Attach all relevant log files

Especially when the bugs are hard to reproduce or limited to only a subset of devices / roms it is nearly impossible to fix bugs without log files. So if you report a bug, also attach the appropriate logs. If you are not sure which log files to add, just add all of them or ask in the forums.

Android log files (logcat)

Android log files are stored using a system called logcats. They are stored on the device and can easily be exported to sd-card, e-mail and a number of other locations with one of the following apps (just search for logcat in the market):

MPExtended log files

You need to collect the MPExtended logs if you run into these problems:

  • During browsing media (music, movies, series)
  • Downloading or streaming
  • Everything tv-server related

In short, for everything that works even if MediaPortal is not running. You can export these log files with the MPExtended tray application, on the troubleshooting tab. This makes sure that your configuration is also included (with passwords removed of course). If you want to collect them manually, they are in the common application data folder, which is C:\ProgramData\MPExtended in Windows 7.

WifiRemote logs

If problems occur related to WifiRemote (remote control, play on pc, playlists,...) you also need to attach the MediaPortal log files. You can easily do this with the MediaPortal debug mode.

Use proper english

Even if you are not a native english speaker, try to formulate your problem in full sentences. Posts like "aMPdroid crash in movies, what do?" will most likely get ignored. If you don't feel able to do so, use the language specific forum sections or ask someone else to post for you.

No pms or mails

Do not write mails asking for help with setup problems or bugs. If you want to chat with our dev team, join the #mp-extended IRC channel on Freenode (chat.freenode.net).
