Overview

How to play films, including multi-part films, DVDs, Blu-rays in MyFilms and even auto-update your database after playback.

Playing Your Films

Once you have used the My Films Setup Wizard to point to your movie catalog and select your options, you can start MediaPortal, load My Films and begin watching your movies.

To learn about the MyFilms interface, see Using MyFilms and the sub-pages describing important features.

Once you display a list of films, and navigation to the film you wish to play you can:

  • Press the Play button to play it
  • press Enter/OK to go to the Details view for the selected film where you can use either Play or Enter/OK to play your film.

For information about the different types of media supported by MyFilms, especially Blu-Ray disks, see Supported Media Types.

Note: As of v 6.0.0, you may choose to use an External Player with My Films (can be useful for playing Blu-ray discs 3D movies, or other media types not supported by My Films or MediaPortal).

Select random movie

Not sure what to watch? As of v 6.1.0 you can Select random movie from the context menu in the film list of any view:

So if it's family night, just

  1. select the Category view 'Family' to display all your family films,
  2. turn on the global filter to 'only unwatched moves'  from the main sliding menu if you wish,
  3. choose select random movie from the context menu
  4. press play and enjoy!

Offline Media (DVDs, Blu-Rays etc)

When playing offline media such as DVDs, if you wish MyFilms to track your watched status, or sync correctly to Trakt, MyFilms needs to know which movie you are playing, so you must play discs from the Details window:

  1. Select the correct film you wish to play
  2. Go to Details view
  3. Insert or play the DVD or Blu-ray

Note: If you insert a disc and have set Autoplay options to automatically play inserted discs, you are not actually playing the film using MyFilms. Thus MyFIlms will not know what movie you are playing and will not update the watched status, etc.

For further info, see Supported Media Types.

Multi-part files

If you have films with multiple media files, you can setup auto-detection of multi-part files when importing films in AMC Updater > Scan Paths and Filters Tab settings. Then all the media files for your films will be added to the Source field in your when you import movies using MyFilms and will not display as separate items/movies.

If your file naming convention matches the one used by MediaPortal:

Example:  <moviename> -CD1.<ext>; <moviename> -CD2.<ext>

then My Films will automatically display a dialog for you to select the file you wish to play:

and automatically play the subsequent files for you.

Watch status, ratings and updates on playback

If you use an AMC catalog type, you can automatically update your database after playing a film, based on the settings you select in MyFilms Setup > Update tab, such as:

  • Watched status - even track 'plays' per user (see Multiple users)
  • Trakt rating popup - to automatically enter a user rating, See Trakt Setup guide for details
  • Update database, delete the movie from the database,  and/or delete the movie file - see Delete Films Setup guide for details.
