Overview

How to setup fanart download, storage and display, or add custom fanart.

Introduction

MyFilms supports a variety of options for fanart:

  • fanart for your films downloaded from TMDb
  • fanart you already have in your movie catalog (if it supports fanart)
  • custom fanart images for films, groups, views, etc.
  • fanart you create within MyFilms from the movie itself

You can customize:

  • where you store fanart
  • how and when you download - i.e. during import or within MyFilms
  • the number and resolution of fanart images imported
  • fanart display such as in views or not, random fanart or not

Fanart Settings

There are two main places you setup fanart:

  • see MyFilms Setup > Artwork Tab > Fanart section - for storage and display options
  • see AMC Updater >  Database Fields tab > Fanart Handling - for downloading fanart when importing new movies

Import Settings

If you use an AMC catalog type, you can automatically download fanart while importing new films, using either:

In both cases you configure the import settings for fanart in AMC Updater >  Database Fields tab under Fanart Handling.

As of v 6.0.0, you can limit the number and resolution of fanart images you download when importing new films, or when updating via AMC Updater.  The default = 3 images, but you can change it, and add limits for the minimum and maximum resolution, and even use different limits for different configs, or different imports when using AMC Updater.

Note: Fanart limits apply only when importing films using AMC Updater, not when downloading fanart, or updating films in MyFilms (e.g. when using Get Internet Info).

NFO Files

If you use the nfo grabber to import from NFO Files:

Enable Use Script for Fanart to import your fanart from the NFO file.

Existing Fanart

My Films can display multiple fanart images in Detail Views, as many as you can find. However, fanart must be stored in a separate folder for each movie, by movie name.  Most external catalogs store fanart in different ways, usually not in a separate folder by movie name.  Therefore, if you already have fanart stored in your external catalog, My Films can normally only display one of these images.

However, you can download fanart within MyFilms (see Fanart).  My Films will store the fanart in the path you select in Artwork Setup. The images will continue to display whenever you use My Films, and you can add/update fanart.  In some catalogs you may be able to link these fanart images to your external catalog as well.

So, you have two options:

  1. Use the fanart folder preset by the Setup Wizard
If your external catalog supports fanart, the Wizard will use the default fanart folder for your external catalog. My Films will create sub folders for each movie within that folder and store any additional fanart you download within My Films in those folders
  2. Use the Default My Films fanart folder =
    ...\MediaPortal\thumbs\MyFilms\Fanart
    * *My Films will then create the fanart folders for each movie within this sub folder, which keeps your external catalog export folder or fanart folder 'clean'.  Of course, you won't get any fanart images already stored in your external catalog, but chances are you will get a lot more using My Films fanart scraper anyway!  This option also means your fanart will still work even if you happen to change catalog software and you will not need to download it again.

Fanart Display

You can customize when and how fanart displays in MyFilms Setup on the Artwork tab in MyFilms Setup such as:

  • Disable fanart display
  • Random fanart in main window, groups or views (Detail window always displays all your fanart images)
  • Fanart for Default Views or All Views
  • Default Fanart image that displays when there is no fanart

Custom Fanart

You can add your own Fanart images, to the sub-folder for each movie or group (which MyFilms auto-creates) of the Fanart path set in MyFilms Setup > Artwork Tab. See Custom Artwork for details.

Or, you can even create you own fanart using the Fanart Manager in MyFilms, see Using MyFilms > Fanart for details.
