Best one: HDMI Pin 19 Cover trick:

Deactivates pin 19 on HDMI cable so that the detection feature is disabled --> until now no known Problems (But do it on your own risk!

easiest solution : Buy a "HDMI-Detective" ca 100 Dollar --> Simulates that the TV is all teh time on --> No device disappearing in Windows anymore

Depending on drivers, DVI connection is different than HDMI but you loose sound.

Anyhow, I managed to solve this by using VNC when TV was off. I've instantly noticed that resolution is changed to 800x600.

Biggest resolution I could choose in Catalyst was 1680x1050. If I had HD display I could fix this instantly by setting resolution to 1280x720.

I had to change monitor preferences, "show unsupported display rates" or something like that. Then in catalyst I could finally see 1920x1080. Refresh rate was fixed in this case to 25 but it doesn't even matter for now. Windows don't size down anymore.
This also worked for me, but it is really I little bit tricky:

1. Install RealVNC or TightVNC and establish a remote connection to your HTPC.
2. Remove your HDMI cable from your display
3. Your resolution should now change to 800x600
4. Start your CCC (Catalyst Control Center)
5. Go to Desktop and Displays and you should now see an old CRT Monitor
6. Right click oin the monitor and select "Configure"
7. Unselect "Use Extendec Display ....."
8. Then set the resolution to something... 800x600 or something, doesnt really matter
9. Click on apply.
10. Then go to Desktop Properties and you can now select your resolution (1280x720 or 1920x1080)

Another Way:
_New solution (to overcome "Old CRT monitor" not available)

I have also had this problem (only installed win 7 this week for first time). I get the half screen problem whenever the folling flow of events occurs:

1. PC in standby with Amp and TV OFF
2. PC recovers from standby (with the Amp and TV still OFF)
3. Amp turned on (the PC screen resolution transiently changes from 1080 to 800x600 then back to 1080 duing the Amp power-on cycle - seen via VNC)
4. TV turns on and the MP half screen is problem is evident (sometimes with associated MP unhandled error).

Airshark's solution (below) worked for me, but with some tweaks because some of his steps aren't available to me (for some reason - same reason as disaster123).

This is where the above solution was a problem for me too (I am using the latest version of Catalyst). To get round it, I modified the procedure to the following:

1. Install RealVNC or TightVNC and establish a remote connection to your HTPC.
2. Remove your HDMI cable from your display.
3. Your resolution should now change to 800x600 (you might drop VNC connection, but if you do then it should re-connect).
4. Using VNC, right click on the desktop and select the Screen Resolution option (not in CCC), then configure the screen to the maximum available (1600x...).
5. Start your CCC (Catalyst Control Center).
6. Go to the resolution settings in CCC and the option to set higher than 1600x... should now be available.
7. Set the required resolution and then apply and close CCC (note, for some reason 1080i 30 hz was the max available refresh in this config, but since I don't care if it is 1080 interlaced or progressive, or what the refresh rate is (for this transient never-used case) I just select anything reasonable)
8. Reinsert the HDMI cable and test the system.

Let me know if this works for you.

OK, I have not read all 26 pages of this thread, but I did spend some SERIOUS time on this today and found a solution that worked for me. It is a regedit!!!!

in the reg, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

Under there, I had three subtrees. this is where the control of what to do in certain instances are set. I found that I needed to change ALL entries under all subtrees to match what I wanted my hard coded resoultion to be set to.

under all the subtrees you will keep digging to find the following...
PrimSurfSize.cx
PrimSurfSize.cy
ActiveSize.cx
ActiveSize.cy

I set the .cx to 1920 and the .cy to 1080. Problem solved for me for now. The PrinSurfSize entries are under a "00" subtree, and the ActiveSize is under a "00" subtree UNDER the 00 subtree.

so you need to look in..
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\xxx\00\00
("xxx" gets replaced by what ever entries are under the Configuration tree)

I hope this helps and is not a repost of info someone else put up. like I said, I didn't read the entire 26 pages, but did read a lot of it and did not see this yet.

It has worked for me. going to go to my in-laws house and set his settings tomorrow. keeping my fingers crossed.

I've always been using an HDMI detective to avoid this problem, but it required also an extra HDMI cable. Decided to try the above and it worked just great!

This also worked for me, although I had about 10-12 subfolders to change.

If you only have sound problems its also possible that the driver of realtek could help (the sound part of hdmi- gpus of Ati/amd are from realtek)
