Curtains

It would be handy to control a motorized curtain (such as Hasta or MotorGardin.se) by TellStick or USB-UIRT when starting a movie.

Temperature

Using a compatible sensor, it's possible to read the room temperature. A Python script can read the room temperature and send an IR signal to the ceiling fan when the temperature exceeds certain levels. This results in a fully automated ceiling fan, but one could also create a MediaPortal plugin to manually set the fan speed in a nice interface. It’s possible to remote control any ceiling fan by an unit like this:
